Prof. Dr.-Ing. Vanessa Borkmann

Vanessa Borkmann studied architecture and urban planning at Technische Universität Stuttgart and at Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule (ETH) in Zurich. She currently is an architect at the Baden-Württemberg chamber. As a research assistant at Fraunhofer-Institut für Arbeitswirtschaft und Organisation IAO in Stuttgart, Borkmann focuses on research projects concerning the hotel and tourism industries. From 2007 to 2015, Borkmann was the director of the hotel and events real estate division of Fraunhofer inHaus-Zentrum in Duisburg. She initiated and manages the joint research project FutureHotel and the FutureHotel showcase for which she received the Innovationspreis für Technologiemanagement of Fraunhofer IAO in 2011. In addition, Borkmann is the initiator and scientific manager of Alpen FutureHotel Y, a joint research project about what alpine tourism will be like in 2030 and about innovative hotel concepts. Borkmann also is responsible for designing and implementing innovative solutions as part of diverse hotel development projects, for example, the digitalised, mobile customer journey (including room selection, check-in/out processes) at Hotel Schani in Vienna. In 2017, Borkmann was presented with the Hospitality Innovation Award for her impact on sustainability in the hotel industry globally. Borkmann develops and studies concepts and solutions for innovative buildings, innovation- and performance-enhancing spaces, and innovative services, in particular, for hotel and tourism applications. During the construction of her institution’s Zentrum für Virtuelles Engineering ZVE in Stuttgart, Borkmann represented the users and provided science-based input regarding the design of the building, the planning of the office environment, and the design of the Urban Living Lab. The editor and author of numerous scientific studies, books, and trade publications, Borkmann works as a lecturer and speaks at academic and professional events. Between 2014 and 2018, Borkmann wrote her doctoral thesis in engineering at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Universität Stuttgart on the development of a model of the mental strain on business travellers during hotel sojourns. In addition to working as a researcher, in 2019 Borkmann received tenure as a professor in tourism with a focus on hotel management.
