Materials in progress: sustainable and intelligent materials for the consumer goods industry
Against the background of current discussions around sustainability, the material flows and the actual materials used in products will have to change in the future. In many areas, we are facing major technological changes and developments in materials can point the way to the future.
This is especially the case when it comes to the consumer goods industry. Materials are needed that can perform functions with much less resource input than was the case 20 years ago, that are lighter, thinner, denser and mechanically stronger, and that also deliver the potentials of a digitised world. Designers in particular are currently having to engage with issues of sustainability and impending resource scarcity and are developing their own material solutions based on bio-based recyclable materials or waste from other industries that can be fed into material cycles at the end of a product's useful life.
