Dr. Juliane Hedderich
Economist Dr. Juliane Hedderich manages the national association (VDFI Verband der Deutschen Daunen- und Federnindustrie) and the European association (EDFA Europäischer Verband der Bettfedern- und Bettwarenindustrie) of the down and feather industry. When she started in 1986 at 30 years of age, she was the youngest managing director of any industry association in Germany. Since the take-over of the European association, Dr. Hedderich has succeeded in increasing the number of members and the revenue tenfold. Dr. Hedderich is an internationally acknowledged expert in the field of norms and has played a crucial part in developing a uniform, quality-oriented European system of norms for feather- and down-filled products. Today, the system is applied throughout the world. The ensuing elimination of national regulations has significantly improved consumer protection in an increasingly globalised market. Dr. Hedderich also has developed guidelines for sustainable industrial production with a focus on preserving natural resources and has promoted the creation of a tracing standard to control the ethically responsible procurement of down and feathers. The zero-tolerance standard, the only one combining animal protection and quality criteria, was introduced on 1 January 2017 and has become the most widely used standard in the bedding industry worldwide. The DOWNPASS 2017 seal is granted for products that are free from down and feathers from live animals and material from foie gras production and stands for controlled animal husbandry monitored by independent certification organisations.
