The importance of sleep at home and on the move
Lecture in german
Sleep is an elementary biological programme, the most important programme for human regeneration and repair. A sufficient amount of sleep often is the best medicine: It protects us from age-related illnesses, boosts our immune system, ensures we live a long life, and has a crucial doping effect on athletes. Sleep champions our careers: It makes us alert and productive and fosters our memory. As in his new book, Schlaf wirkt Wunder (Droemer Knaur, 2018), Dr. Hans-Günter Weeß will discuss how lack of sleep affects our health and why we should always get enough sleep, both at home and away. Lack of sleep doubles our risk of depression and increases our risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke by 23% and 11%, respectively. If we get only two hours less sleep, our immune system weakens, and we increase our risk of catching a cold by 30%, of getting hypertension by 66%, and of being overweight by 50%.
