Udo Gommel, head of the department »Ultraclean Technology and Micromanufacturing«, has been working since 1996 at Fraunhofer IPA with his focus on equipment design, clean room suitable materials, production planning, collaboration and administration in diverse technical guidelines (VDI, DIN, CEN and ISO).

• Project 1: Precision Cleaning Cleanroom for ESA ExoMars project Location/Partner: ESTEC, European Space Agency, Noordwijk, The Netherlands Realization Time and Period: 3 months (Oct’ 2009 to Dec’ 2009) and 2.5 months (Apr’ 2011 to June 2011) Budget: 1.8 Million EUR Special Project Expertise: Udo Gommel designed within this project a very special cleanroom for space applications, considering special requirements for ultra-precision cleaning tasks of the ExoMars project. He performed the following cleanroom designing tasks for this project:
o design and layout of cleanroom footprint, also considering all relevant constraints for material and personal flow concept, equipment and media to be installed
o design and selection of cleanroom suitable floors, ceilings and walls
o design of the cleanroom raised floor system for the precision cleaning cleanroom area
o design of the cleanroom personnel air shower
o construction materials for integrating the clean air components into the existing cleanroom
o layout, concept of and design of cleanroom equipment, personnel and material flow
o concept and design of personnel clothing concept/rules of conduct
o certification according to ISO 14644 standards

• Project 2: Dedicated R&D Cleanroom for the TOP LED technology solutions regarding future solid state lighting devices LED manufacturing cleanroom Location/Partner: Microelectronica S.A., Bucharest, Romania Realization Time and Period: 9 months (September 2011 to May 2012) Budget: 3.8 Million EUR Special Project Expertise: Udo Gommel designed within this project the cleanroom for a LED manufacturing and research cleanroom at Micreoelectronica S.A. (according to ISO 14644-1). Her performed following cleanroom design tasks within this specific topic:
o design of the cleanroom footprint and cleanroom equipment plan
o layout, concept and design of cleanroom personnel and material flow (considering ISO 14644-5, VDI 2083-5 and VDA part 19.2 restrictions and suggestions)
o design and selection of cleanroom suitable floors, ceilings and walls
o design of the cleanroom personnel air shower
o design of the cleanroom clothing procedures

• Project 3: Cleanroom for the cleaning of Space Flight Hardware Location/Partner: Thales Alenia Space Italia S.p.A., Torino, Italy Realization Time and Period: 4 months (December 2014 to March 2015) Budget: 0.9 Million EUR Special Project Expertise: Udo Gommel performed the design of the cleanroom at Thales Alenia Space for the ultraprecision cleaning cleanroom of flight hardware and realized within this project ultra-flexible cleanroom concept. His work within the project included the following tasks:
o design and layout of cleanroom footprint, also considering all relevant constraints for material and personal flow concept, equipment and media to be installed
o design and selection of cleanroom suitable floors, ceilings and walls
o design of the cleanroom raised floor system for the precision cleaning cleanroom area
o design of the cleanroom personnel air shower
o construction materials for integrating the clean air components into the existing cleanroom
o design of the cleanroom clothing procedures and cleanroom rules of conduct

Nanoskalige Partikel sind anders – VDI 2083 Blatt 1.1

Mit fortschreitender Miniaturisierung der Strukturen muss man auf immer kleinere Partikel achten und deren Konzentration messen. Dem naheliegenden Gedanke, die übliche Klassifizierungsformel schlicht zu extrapolieren macht die Natur einen Strich durch die Rechnung. Für die Messung der Konzentration von Nano-Partikeln und die Klassifizierung der Luftreinheit auf deren Basis sind neue Standards notwendig. Ein Vorschlag wird in VDI 2083 Blatt 1.1 entwickelt.
